BLACKBURN MUSEUM PROJECT

TASK: PREPARE A PERSONAL INTERPRETATION OF YOUR CHOSEN PIECE. THIS SHOULD REFLECT YOUR SPECIALISM OR AREA OF INTEREST. YOU MAY DECIDE TO PRESENT SKETCHES, COLLAGES, PHOTOGRAPHS, 3D OBJECTS OR EVEN SCRIPTS IN ORDER TO EXPLAIN YOUR INTERPRETATION AND IDEAS.

This is a design I produced based on my initial research at Blackburn museum and further research into typography in fashion.

It developed from the text I saw on the Japanese prints in the museum, which I later found out were often the artists signatures. Prints where the text was put in red rectangles particularly stood out for me, the bold colour against the muted backgrounds.

I took forward the idea of the red rectangles by designing a jumpsuit which would be made from two long rectangles, which would hang over the shoulders and be attached in the centre front and centre back to create a single garment.

My idea was to make the garment from two separate dyed, silk rectangles, and then to embroider Japanese characters made from black beads, down the garment. The text on the above design, is a mixture of characters taken from various pieces I saw in the museum, if I take the project further - as in make the garment, I will spend longer planning something for the garment to say, which links the outcome to the initial inspiration.
